Volunteer for Expo
Whether you need volunteer hours for a class, SEC Philanthropy engagement credit, or if you would like a first-hand look at how Expo works and an extra way to interact with your engineering peers and attending companies, please consider signing up! Volunteers play a vital role in helping welcome both our applicant and company attendees.
We have general volunteer spots available from 7am-5pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (Sept 10-12, 2024).
Event Day Instructions
- Check-In: Report to our Director of Philanthropy in SEC HQ (SQR 219) at least 15 minutes before your time slot begins for training and to trade off with the current student in the role.
- Dress Code: Business professional attire is required at all times when volunteering. For examples, check out our Instagram.
Your Potential Role
While roles may vary day-of, here are some positions we need student volunteers to help fill:
Description: Bag Checkers manage the bag check area with our security partners, tagging bags and providing return slips or retrieving checked bags using return slips.
Description: Name Taggers handle the student check-in name tag desk. They scan Expo Check-Ins to print name tags and distribute major-specific color stickers and clips.
Description: Food Guards ensure that only SEC Exec members and recruiters have access to the catering room in the main event space.
Description: Food Deliverers assist in transporting food from the main event space to various locations where recruiters are stationed. An SEC Exec member drives a golf cart for the deliveries.
Description: Company Helpers work with company representatives to set up the stations for companies, and assist them with other tasks as needed. There will need to be two of these helpers in the morning every day.
Description: Volunteers stationed at different campus locations to support Expo operations. They report directly to the Exec member at their assigned building.
Description: Van Drivers transport Expo recruiters from Chicken Hill Lot to Squires and potentially to other buildings post-check-in. All van drivers must have a valid drivers license. They must register with Fleet Services by the week before the event using the following steps:
Van Driver Registration Steps:

- Fill out the "FS-2" form and email it to chaffin@vt.edu, copying secdop@vt.edu in the email.
- Register online at Fleet Commander.
- Schedule a Zoom meeting with Fleet Services for driver's license validation by calling 540-231-6141.
- Email secdop@vt.edu to confirm completed registration.
Description: Floaters are the utility players of Expo, being assigned to various tasks as needed, such as ensuring no parking in front of Squires on Alumni Mall, cutting out name tags for recruiters.
Description: This volunteer stands on Alumni Mall and ensures that only SEC Van Drivers are able to park on Alumni Mall to drop off employers and other needed supplies. If someone does park on Alumni Mall, this volunteer kindly asks that they move.
